Do you ever see any graphics like the windows scroll at bottom or is it all text type of display?

I don't know how windows xp could end up at the command prompt.

Might end up having to boot to xp cd and try repair or complete reload.

There is no way for Widows XP to boot to a DOS prompt as there is no DOS in Windows XP. The best you will get is the recovery console that looks like a DOS prompt but isn't but you need to boot from a Windows XP CD to get that or boot to Safe Mode, Command Prompt only.

Next time you see the command prompt type ver. This will give you the version of the command interpreter that is running. If it says anything about MS-DOS or DR-DOS then you are not booting to Windows.XP. Check that you haven't left a CD in the CD drive.
