Specs: Windows XP sp2, 1.5 gb
i want to change my cpu alone --already 4 years old--can i retain the monitor and other perpherals like speakers ,printer etc

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, its is a component within the case. Many people refer to the computer itself as a cpu, not really correct.

anyways, you should be able to keep your monitor, the majority of computers today will have a vga output and DVI. if not, then you can always get adaptops.

mouse, keyboard, speakers should all be compatible.

A CPU is a chip that fits in a socket on the motherboard. THESE are CPUs. If you're asking about replacing the entire computer, your externals should be transferrable as long as your new motherboard has all the same connections.
