You need to explain what you are trying to do. The installation key is NOT located in the CD files.

Post the brand and model of your computer.

There is a product key in a file named unattend.txt, but it's generic. It's NOT the key that was used to install XP originally on your system. If you're trying to do a repair install, it's useless - you need "your" key.

The key from the disk can be used to do a clean install of XP, but XP will NOT activate unless the key is changed. So either way, you will need the "legal" key that belongs to your system.

I replaced the harddrive. It is a dell deminsiion...The harddrive is bigger than the original. There is no restore disk available,so I usede a larger harddrive. The sys disk would not work anyway with the wrong drive.
It is a clean install, but the generic key lets it go no further

Why did you replace the HDD, was it bad or did you just need more capacity? You could have just left your original drive in place & added the new drive as a slave.

Did you try using the Dell key? It should be on a label pasted on the tower somewhere. If it's not, you can still retrieve it from your old XP installation by hooking up your old HDD again & running Magic Jelly Bean keyfinder. It would have been much easier if you had done this before swapping the HDDs. Here's how to change the key:
