If you have Windows XP Home installation CD, it should be bootable. Therefore, you simply have to boot you computer from DVD and install Windows.

You are making things much too difficult. Boot with the XP install disk, create any desired partitions, and then install XP. There is no need for Fdisk or any other ancient DOS utilities.

you don't "download" xp
you install it by first going into the bios and setting the boot order to cd/dvd first and hard drive second.
then you "boot" your xp cd and install will autostart.
follow the prompts from there.

no fdisk or format required

It is saying that D because the OS believes that there is some partition before the D: which would be it's C: drive.

You delete all partitions. Be careful. Some computers have hidden partitions that have your original xp install on them. Then you create a single partition and install xp. After you have xp installed then you look at OEM site for drivers for any hardware not found in xp.

One can slipstream their cd but I suspect that is beyond what you would want to do.
