Copy them to another drive first. Then boot to the new OS.

Installing on d: infers the original drive [or partition if a single drive] exists in the system.

You would boot to xp on d: and from there copy your files to your new install.

DO UNDERSTAND that you can not remove c: drive [if a drv and not a partition] and whatever you do DO NOT delete any files at the root of c: since you need these for booting xp on d:
