Specs: Windows xp, dell /ddr ram
I have a dell 4600 I installed two one gig sticks into the mother board. the comp recognizes the ram but only 256 is allocated not the hole two gigs that i want. Can that be changed? do i need to upgrade the bios?

What make you say you have only 256 (what?) allocated to what?

Many DELL computers have what is called an "Install Mode" setting in the BIOS that limits RAM to 256MB.
Check if this is set.

The aperture setting has to do with the graphics. It is NOT the amount of memory used by the video card, but it is the amount of reserve memory that the video card can tap into if it's running low. The more video memory you have, the lower the aperture setting can be. Generally it should be set at either 128MB or 256MB, but it depends on the video card. I think what you're looking for is something else.
