Specs: Windows XP
was in the middle of a system restore when the power cut. When my computer loaded again i got the welcome screen and an error message which reads "Explorer EXE - Bad Image...The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\BROWSERUI.dll is not a valid Windows Image. Please check this against your installation diskette. I only see the image i saved as my desk top picture. I have no cds for this computer so cant to a install or clean up. I have tried starting in safe mode this brings up a black screen with safe mode all around it and then a message saying display properties are wrong. I have tried last good configuration also. Please help me if you can

twoshai, since you were in the middle of a restore, I'm pessimistic. My thought is that the Windows files got erased or corrupted. Hope not.
There's a free version of Linux available for download. Perhaps you can get a friend to download it and make you a disc? If so, you can boot from it and see if the Windows files are still there? Perhaps all you need do is get to a command prompt and run Windows? I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Is the restore option available in Safe Mode? If not, type this lot (exactly) in the
Run box then hit Enter key and see if restore starts:

Otherwise go to the Run box (from Safe Mode) and type:

sfc /scannow

It's a bit hopeful but the install "might" have got as far as backing up files.

What was the "exact" error message, and can you right click the desktop and go to Display Properties?

Hiya right clicking the desk top does not work, and neither does typing %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe in to run. I tried the scannow, the box opens and it runs but after it is finished it just disappears and nothing has changed

I HAVE EDITED THIS POST (in case you saw it earlier).

I assume you rebooted after scannow.

Ooops, sorry about asking for the exact error message. It was clearly given so I must have been thinking about another post.

It does sound a bit tricky without an XP CD.

I think you meant BROWSEUI.dll rather than BROWSREUI.dll in that error message. I can send you one but the chances are that other files are corrupted too. It can be put in using a Linux Live CD (such as Puppy Linux), run directly from the CD by booting with it in the drive. When you remove the CD you go back to where you were. The CD would have to be made by burning an image (ISO) on another machine and the CD in your dud machine would need to be made "first boot" from BIOS.
