I have no icons or tool bar on windows xp

August 23, 2010 at 13:50:44
Specs: Windows XP
I was told to look in the task bar for explorer.exe and end the process, etc. I cannot do that since explorer.exe is not in my task bar. I can either only operate in safe mode or only open anything from the task bar. how do I reinstall explorer.exe which I am missing to get my toolbars and icons back on my desktop? I called Microsoft and they were no help! and calling Dell I am not into speaking to people I cannot understand.

Open Task Manager, click File>New Task Run then type in:

explorer.exe

then click OK. See if this brings back your Taskbar and Desktop icons.

I tried that and it did not work. I also tried system restore and it would only let me go back to Aug. 19th which is not far enough back to get rid of the problem. Any suggestions? Do I need to reinstall xp? I really need to get this fixed since it is my laptop that I use all the time.

Go to the link below and scroll down to line 195 (right column)and download the "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar" .vbs file. Save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

If that doesn't work try the line 117 (left column) " Restore Taskbar and Start Menu" .reg file. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

If you have an install CD home=home, pro=pro (you can't mix & match) then you can try a repair install and all you will lose are the critical updates.

I'm having some problem understanding your original question:-

"I was told to look in the task bar for explorer.exe and end the process, etc. I cannot do that since explorer.exe is not in my task bar. I can either only operate in safe mode or only open anything from the task bar. how do I reinstall explorer.exe which....."

1. Ending the process explorer.exe is done in the Task Manager not the taskbar. You use Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager.

2. When you say you can open things from the taskbar can I assume you mean the bar at the bottom of the screen that shows the clock?

3. If explorer.exe was missing I doubt you would be able to use Windows at all (not even the limited use you appear to have).

Have you tried the kellyskorner fixes from Safe Mode? They are supposed to Run not Open. You simply OK any messages they give you until they have done their job.

I am sorry, my mistake. I meant Task Manager. I can open my files through the Task Manager, but only that. Explorer.exe is not in the Task Manager any longer. I also tried to type it in the "File new task run" and does not work. I have no icons or start menu, clock, task bar on my desktop. My desktop only shows a blank screen with my background display picture. I have tried system restore, but it will not let me go back far enough in order to try to clean this. Do I need to reload windows xp as a repair? if so, what do I need to do before doing that? Should I put all my files on a flash drive to save stuff? I appreciate any help. Thanks, liz

Did you try the the suggestions given in #1 and the kellyskorner fixes "from Safe Mode"?

When you can only work in Safe Mode it often means that there is a driver issue.
While you are there, see if there are any errors showing in Device Manager.

izvargo, Try holding down the Windows Key and the F key on your keyboard at the same time which should bring up the Search Box. Do a File search for all files and folders and type in explorer.exe and see if any files appear and post back with the location(s) of those files.
