Nothing unusual about installing 32bit on 64bit mainboard.

Your first step would be to determine if this is a hardware or software issue. Can you boot to the bios and stay there without it shutting down?

I bought the system from craigslist, Everything worked fine but when I installed microsoft windows it started to start over and over again. I dont understand the meaning of "bomb at some point"

bomb as in crash, fail, not complete the install

You say the computer worked fine yet you then go on to say you installed windows. Did it not come with windows installed?

I take it that it did not come with a OS cd either. What brand of computer is it?

A "p4/1gig" system w/o OS from Craigslist? If you paid more than $50, you paid too much.

Get ultimate boot cd or other diags and run them maybe.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

If this is a OEM pc you have to have a OEM XP cd. This can be why your xp install does not work or there was mechancial issues with the pc in the first place which were revealed when a OS was installed.

Never buy off craigslist unless you see it fully operational in person.
