How are you doing it?

Press Print Screen key, open paint, Edit>Paste?

Doing Print Screen puts the screen display into the ClipBoard.
You can view what is in Clipboard by doing...
Start, then RUN, then type clipbrd, then OK.

Then do PASTE while in Paint. That places what's in Clipboard in Paint.
When you COPY or CUT, that goes to Clipboard too, and the previous item in Clipboard is no longer there.

You can check your Clipboard contents by typing clipbrd.exe in a "Run" window

Clipbook Viewer

Sometimes the clipbrd.exe file is not located in c:\windows\system32 folder

You can then try Start > Run > c:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\clipbrd.exe

If that still doesn't work, then you may need to "expand" clipbrd.ex_

Start > Run > expand C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\clipbrd.ex_ c:\windows\system32\clipbrd.exe

Then run clipbrd normally again

I hope this helps :)
