Is this a new install of WinXP or did this just start?

If just started, have you recently made any hardware changes?

So, the two computers were networked? Did you remove the infection from either computer? See the link below for help with that.

Yes, the infections have been removed from the other pc and my laptop. The computer that is needing the windows x p is an e-machine. Do you think there is hope of saving this computer? Yes, these computers are networked.i have a question...if I use the recovery tool...is this on the booting menu or bios? Think we could go that route being I don't have start button?
If there is a specific f key for recovery...plz share info

Did you look at the second links? You can repair WinXP or you can perform a destructive factory restore, which in this case, may be a good option.

You had a root kit infection which is hard to remove and can hide. E machines come with a restore partition on the hard drive. That should still be there if you didn't tamper with it or change the hard drive. You also were supposed to make a set of restore disks to use in the event your hard drive fails, rendering the restore partition unavailable.

If you elect to perform a factory restore and like many users, have not maintained any backups of your personal files, you may still be able to recover them.

Post back with your status regarding the above conditions and I will advise further.

Where is the restore partition located on the hard drive for an e-machine...I'm new at this entirely. The original owner passed on in dec. 2012

Look at the link below. Emachines computers are made by Gateway.

Keep in mind that doing this will erase all information on the computer. You will need to reinstall all service packs and updates for Windows and any third party software will need to be reinstalled.

If you have any files you want to recover then say so now.

You can also probably still make a set of recovery disks for your emachines. These disks are valuable if you lose the hidden partition.
