Microsoft has never supported upgrading from a client OS (XP) to a server (Server 2003). You would have to backup all data, do a clean install of the OS and applications, and restore your data.

Since XP and Server 2003 are very similar internally there would be little point to this unless you need a server OS.

Active Directory integration is usually where the Admin of the AD server creates a computer then attaches the computer to the directory. You then set the xp to be part of a domain as it was most likely set as a work group computer.
