Solved How to update a reluctant Ccleaner

January 18, 2017 at 09:34:21
Specs: Windows XP pro version 2002 SP3, pentium 4 2.40Ghz 2gig ram
How can I resolve not being able to update ccleaner to the latest version. I've downloaded it
from piriform but when I try to install it I get a 'Ccleaner has encountered a problem and needs to close' message. I'm running version 19 without any issues at the moment. How can I find out what this problem is.

The stuck install of CCleaner is blocking your other install attempts? Remove it, reboot and see if adobe flash will update now.

Who can know which one is playing the blocking game - remove all of them. Reboot and try something other than CCleaner first.

I'm at 4.11, only three years old, still works fine, not next to useless at all.

Are you downloading it, Saving it as a file, then double clicking the downloaded file to install it? If not try that because installs can sometimes backfire if Run from the browser.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

"I'm running version 19 without any issues at the moment"

There is no 19. The latest version is 5.26. I suggest you download it from the "builds" page. Get the Slim version if it's available, if not, get the Standard version. Watch the screen carefully during installation & do not let any bundled software install along with it.

When installing anything downloaded from the web... "never"use the default proffered automatic install path. "Always" use the custom/manual option. Then as per "riider" watch for any pre-checked boxes; uncheck em all - except the one for actual item you wish to install,

That way you avoid all manner of junk, unwanted stuff and system changes. Much of it is a true PIA to eradicate/resolve.

You may find it easier to simply uninstall your current version of ccleaner, then reboot and install latest version that way?

I've tried both methods with the same result.
I've also tried from the 'build' page (no slim version available) with the same result.
I'm reluctant to ditch my current 5.19.5633 until all other
options are exhausted. thanks for advice.

Any advice on identifying the root of the problem would be welcome as I'm having the same issue with avira GUI.exe and adobe flash update.......

You may need to re-install CCleaner. As suggested, use the Slim version if available.

The version you are currently running is really old. Probably next to useless.

If you should take this further but then wish to revert back to your old version it can be obtained here (and probably other places):
http://filehippo.com/download_cclea...
FileHippo is generally regarded as safe.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
