how to start recovery when f10 fails

Specs: Windows XP
windows xp will not start, says hal.dll is missing or corrupt. already replaced it though. Just want to restore it now. recovery is supposed to start with F10 on start up according to HP. Nothing happens though. Looked at it with another computer, partition is still there,seems ok. What file starts recovery?

Do you have a User Manual? Have you contacted HP? You have not provided any detail regarding your computer model which makes it hard for helpers to assist.

Have you tried F11? Most HP/Compaq machines I've come across use that to access the recovery partition.

HP (& others OEM builders) no longer supplies the recovery/restore discs with the system, but they do supply the means to create them. Unfortunately, most people don't bother to read the documentation that comes with their new PC, so the discs never get created.
