How to save settings on another HD

Specs: Windows XP HomeXP3, Pentium 4 and 1.5gb
My computer has become very slow and sluggish and I normally rectify this by reformatting my HD and then install Windows XP again. I know the purest in this game will never understand why I'm doing it but it works. My problem is that I loose all my settings, all software programs installed, and more importantly all the "updates" on my virus and spyware programs. Is there a way I can go about saving all of this on a separate HD? Kindly explain step-by-step how to do it. Highly appreciated.

I don't see any way of doing this, simple or otherwise. Nice idea but not practical in the real world.

You can clone the drive but it will have all the existing problems. Nothing beats a clean minimal installation. I would clone and then try fixing the installation. Remove as much for the junk as possible.

Thanks. I will opt for the clean installation. That's what vI've been doing it in the past but I just thought there might be a way to save especially all the updates on my AVG, Ad-Aware and Superantispyware programs
