Hello I attempted to get rid of an virus but now my computer logs and immediately off. I have tried to use all safe mode options but it logs off there also I have a recovery disk But my cd rom is not working..it won't even open. Is there another was to restore without losing data, if not is there another way to restore period. Please help and please be specific and detailed, still learning about computers Thanks
Replace the CD-ROM drive first then look at your repair options. Is your "restore" disk a full install disk or does it simply perform a recovery using files on a second (possibly hidden) partition on your harddrive?
Sorry but without a working CDROM drive you will not be able to repair the current installation. If you have files/data that you wish to save you may be able to take your harddrive and slave it into another system to recover the files, but you cannot repair the operating system that way.
Watch the first screen(s) during a boot up. If you get something saying press a certain keyboard key for a system restore/Repair, try that. There is usually a hidden partition on the hard drive that has a recovery image.
FWIW to XP users: When you click on the 'Command Prompt' you are just causing the 'Command prompt' to be displayed. This prompt gives you access to NTVDM.EXE, the 'NT Virtual DOS Manager'.
After fixing the cd rom insert the os and repair it,if it doesnt work use the recovery disk, move the files that you wanted and then format and replace a new os,,,,,,,,coz, same happened to me too.............
