How to reinstall Win XP

Dell Inspiron mini 9 netbook

Specs: Windows XP Home Edition
I am planning on selling my Dell Mini, and want to reload windows XP. Without the disk drive, and not having a external Disk drive, I set up a USB flash drive with a copy of XP Home Edition on it... when I boot with the flash drive I get "Ntldr is missing..."

Can someone explain how I can fix this, or provide me steps to relaod XP on a Dell mini using a flash drive and the dell system disk?

Thanks! - Rick

What do you mean "Without the disk drive"? If you have removed the disk drive where do you plan on installing WinXP?

This Dell Mini 910 does not have a disk drive... so I have to install using USB flash drive.

There are many types of disk drives. I assumed you meant hard disk drive, not optical disk drive.

What OS came on the mini?

You should be able to perform a restore to factory settings of the hidden partition on the hard drive.

Why waste a WinXP home license?

Now, to explain why you are getting the message you are seeing. The mini is most likely NOT booting to the flash drive. Enter the BIOS (setup) screens and change the boot order. As I stated, unless you wiped the entire drive ( a big mistake) you should be able to restore the mini back to the way it was bought.

The XP Home edition works fine.. I just want to restore it to original configuration before I give it to another person (being auctioned off at a Foundation Fund Raiser...I have the Dell Disk with the XP SP 3 on it, as well as I have an XP Home Edition Disk that I tried too... as for restoring factory settings, I shut off "system restore" when I got it, asd the internal storage is only 8gb....

My original USBflash boot setup was done on a win 7 machine, using WintoFlash software, the Windows XP Home Edition cd, and a 4gb Flash drive.. Could doing that on a Win 7 machine (creating the flash boot on the USB flash drive) been an issue?

So, this unit has a 8GB SSD hard drive? Did it come with a hidden restore partition or with restore disks?

If restore disks is that what you are trying to use? I understand you are using a flash drive. If you copied WinXP files to a flash drive the drive must still be made bootable. Did you do that? That is in addition to the boot order mentioned above.

RESOLVED.... I recreated the USB Flash drive with WinXP disk using another Win XP computer rather than my Win 7 machine, and this time, the error message did not appear, and the setup is now running...

Thanks for your time - Rick
