You can't do that in WinXP without a third party utility.

Not necessary anyway. If you have room elsewhere just change the path where you wish to install or save to wherever you do have room. Everything doesn't need to be on the C partition with Windows.

Technically speaking he can. IF he has the windows support tools installed he can use the diskpart command. Alternatively Partition Magic, Acronis or any 3rd party disk utility can resize the partitions for you and reallocate space.

Last time I read the diskpart documentation diskpart will not extend the system or boot partitions. This leaves only third party apps to do this.
BTW Acronis is a clone utility which in the case of existing partitions would be useless.

The least risky expansion of c; is to backup and delete all other partitions, use PM or other to expand c: into the free space, recreate the old partitions in the remaining disk space and restore.

Otherwise you risk losing all of your data and having to start fresh with a wipe and repartition of the disk.

@ Wanderer. Negative Acronis make disk imaging software along with disk paritioning software that has been around for the best part of a decade. Iv used it many times myself in preference to Partition Magic.

Also the hard drive manufacturers typically have very powerful partitioning software available for free in their websites, you just need to establish which manufacturer makes the hard drive to get the correct one, and read the PDF instructions to be sure it can do what you want.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
If all else fails, read instructions.
