how to delete NTFS files/folders

Specs: Windows XP, P4 2gHz / 1 GB
how do I delete an NTFS file or folder from an external HD? Directory with full File/folder name is 262 characters (don't ask). DOS? No. Right click, delete? No. Third party software? Doesn't work either. Right click on File/Folder gives option to "Open", "Explore", "Search", "Send To". None of options does anything - literally. As well, normal Right click menu (Cut, Copy, Create Shortcut, Delete, Rename, and Properties are inaccessible (don't display).

Suggestions that work? Thank you.

Try making the full pathname shorter by renaming some of the intermediate directories. You should be OK if you can bring it down to 250 characters or so. Alternatively, you may have a permissions problem.

Not sure if they will work on external drives.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.
