Specs: Windows XP
The documentation of the DOS QGREP command is silent on how to use it to search sub-folders. Does anyone know how?

No, unlike the UNIX versions, qgrep doesn't appear to have that facility. Does it have to be a command-line utility? Windows Grep is a gui version of grep that claims to be able to recurse into folders. (I'm just going by the website - I've not used this program myself.) There's also something called PowerGrep that people swear by, but it's rather pricey.
