You just need to install IE8 - it will overwrite IE 7. Get the associated Windows XP updates afterwards.

See here - hopefully it's the official MS IE8 download:

Haven't been able to verify link because I'm on Win 8.1 and it kicks me off saying it is unsuitable - not surprised.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You would be better off using a different browser. Try Mozilla Firefox. IE8 is not secure. Of course neither is WinXP.

OtheHill is spot on.

However I produced a couple of notes about how to keep it safer:

MS has monkeyed around with their IE8-for-XP links and Derek's link goes to a page that tells you that IE8 isn't compatible with your XP. Check my # 3 posting here from yesterday:

http://www.computing.net/answers/wi...

for the download and associated security updates.

Sorry about that link in #1. Seems the only way I can see what it is really pointing to in future is to dig out my XP (or maybe even Win7) and not use this Win 8.1 for this lark, which just leaves you guessing. That's what I meant by "hopefully". Good to see that DAVE has now provided a working link.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

That was the link I had too for the download but when I tried it yesterday I noticed it gave that erroneous message about incompatibility instead so I searched for awhile until I found an actual download site.

I often have this Win 8.1 issue with MS sites. I guess I could have linked to FileHippo or MajorGeeks or Tucows, which, I believe, are still safe.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Is this a recent install of XP? Do you have SP3 installed? if not, you should get it ASAP. It's available thru Windows Update but here's a download link in case you want to save a copy for future use?

IE8 was released about 6 years ago. To get it, just run Windows Update. But as the others have stated, it's outdated & not secure. I suggest you install Firefox or Chrome & not use IE8 at all.
