How do I do a system recovery on an HP mini?

January 20, 2012 at 13:54:49
Specs: Windows XP V2 SP3
My husband bought a used HP mini that worked for a couple of days then stopped. When I load I get the Windows loading screen then a black screen. Ive ordered a system recovery kit from HP but it only comes in cd format. The mini only has a flash drive. I have an external dvd drive that will plug into the usb port but I cannot configure in the computer because it won't turn on. I can get into BIOS and change the boot priority but it doesn't recognise the external drive. I only get the SATA and network boot options. I can plug in a flash drive and get the option to boot from that. But, I'm not sure how to copy the recovery program into a flash drive. Now, I have the computer and the software and am stuck! Help please!

This webpage has instructions and links to free utilities (two are from HP, so should work for you).

Try tapping the ESC Key as soon as you power on the unit. That (at least on some "Minis") will take you to a Startup Menu. Press the F11 Key to launch System Recovery. Follow the on-screen instruction from there. That should take the machine back to default factory settings. <color="red">CAUTION!!!</color> This will probably mean losing any files that haven't been backed-up.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

I'll try the escape key. F11 does nothing on it. Tried it multiple times. Thats why I caved and bought the stupid recovery from HP. Why on earth they make a recovery disk for a computer that they make without a disk drive, I just don't know.
And no files to lose, yet. Just bought it off someone this week.

Escape key does nothing. Computer just restarts to a blank screen.
Is there a way to make a boot drive with a flash drive?
