Is there some reason why you can't click Start > Shutdown > Restart ?

In that case, go to control panel, system, hardware, Device Manager and Remove the optical drive from the hardware profile. Then reboot, and XP will attempt to reinstall it- hopefully, succesfully - with the latest drivers. If that doesn't work, try rolling back its drivers, also from device manager.

Why do you think this is a windows problem? If you want to reinstall windows, you will need the CD it came on - and an optical drive that works. And if the optical drive works in the pre-windows environment, then you are correct about it being a windows problem.

Hi,
The computer is a Fujitsu Siemans Amilo Pro V3505, i took it to a repair shop, and he tried a diff. DVDRom in it, and it still didn't work, therefore told me i have to do a full system reboot, to try and establish the pathways again! Thanks for your help, any more ideas? i'm trying to do this myself, rather than pay someone, but if i have to, then so be it.
Cheers

... try this first!

... click onto CdGone.zip download and unzip the content then right click onto the file "cdgone.reg" option "merge" reboot/restart the pc and check if the cd/dvd is now working.
**************************************************************
... download (v1.55) Win32 GUI: http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/

... extract from the "zip" file "NECWinFlash.exe" then right click/open it.

... it may find your cd/dvd drive straightaway, if not click the "scan" button

... if it does see the dvd drive download this (do this at you own risk!)

... extract the files from the "zip" file to a folder then using "NECWinFlash" point it to the extracted "bin" file click >> tutorial

... hope this works for you the original optiarc site does not have firmware updates!
