how can i reformat with no cdrom

Specs: Windows XP Home, 1.4ghz/528
my buddy got viruses on his comp and basicly erased vital things. now the cdrom dosent work, and i tried using external cdrom but same effect. i would like to know a way to reformat his hard drive not using a cdrom. i have XP opp on cd but of no use without cdrom. diso awnsers!!!!

Viruses infect Windows, not optical drives. Booting from a CD drive occurs before Windows is even loaded so if you can't boot off the disc, the problem is with the drive (or disc)...the virus has nothing to do with it. Do you have the BIOS configured to boot from the CD?

Another possibility is to boot off a WinME boot floppy, IF the PC has a floppy drive. The BIOS would have to be configured to boot from the floppy.

February 17, 2009 at 16:19:19 will allow you to download a set of boot floppies. As jam mentioned, the virus wont cause it not to boot the cd. If you have a dos boot floppy that has fdisk or format on it, boot to it and run the command from there.

Compaqs normally have a hiddem folder on the hard drive with a recovery image. Check the following site for instructions. It's worth a try.

boot floopies without the cd drive are worthless. They depend on the OS on cd to install.

You can use KillDisk
and download it on to a 3.5 inch floppy.
