I recently found this game from 1996 i used to play. I've managed to install it no problem. But when i try to load the game up i'm left with a blank screen. I've been told i might need a DOS emulator, but this can be complicated if your computer illiterate like myself. Does anyone know where i can find a DOS emulator and how I would work such a thing?

That's the .exe file for the game you wish to play. An example is Oregon.Exe for Oregon Trail.
