Specs: N/A
A member of my family has given me thier old office computer and when I started up there was a BIOS password and I don't know how to get past it or reset it but I have heard there are some BIOS passwords set by the manufacturer. the computer is a HP Compaq dx2000 mt (Microtower)

-Unplug the power cord and remove the side panel
-Locate the CMOS battery(looks like small silver coin) and remove it for about 30 seconds.

-Install back the battery and start the system.

You should enter the BIOS screens (setup) after clearing the CMOS to reset some values. The data and time will be wrong and the boot order may nedd to be changed. You should enable the use of legacy USB devices too.

"when I started up there was a BIOS password"

Normally you have to press the appropriate key (F1?) at just the right time to enter the BIOS or bring up the BIOS password prompt. Is that what you're doing or is it booting directly to the password prompt? Are you seeing the Compaq splash screen 1st?
