How can I avoid Error running DOS-based COBOL in Windows XP

March 8, 2012 at 08:48:31
Specs: Windows XP
I am running the COBOL DOS program and receive from time to time an "ERROR 98" message.
When I run the vutil program to fix it, do I loose any records, where do they go to?
We are running the program on various operating systems, from Windows 95 to Windows 7.

I'd say it is a cobol issue. To keep all platforms the same, I'd run a virtual machine and only use one version of dos and one environment.

A Pit Bull is like a gun you can pet. And there is no safety on it.

For Vsta or Windows 7, I have no idea whether there is any virtual machine you can install that you can install Dos in and run a Dos program.

For 2000 or XP, install Virtual PC 2004, install Dos, and run the COBOL in Dos in that.

Virtual PC 2007 can be installed in Vista and possibly Windows 7, but I don't think you can install Dos in it.

For Win 95 - 98SE, you should be able to run COBOL fine in MsDos mode.
