Are you installing Ubuntu? Try using WUBI & just install Ubuntu as another program. You don't need VMware & don't have to worry about NTFS. I believe WUBI is built in to the latest Ubuntu distros. Just boot into Windows, pop in the Ubuntu disc & follow the instructions.

In VMware click File / New / Virtual Machine and follow the wizard to create a new virtual machine.
This virtual machine by default is configured with Memory, a Hard Disk 0, CD/DVD, Floppy, Network Adapter, USB Controller, Sound Card, Display and Processor.
By clicking "Edit virtual machine settings" at the left side of the window, you can add or remove hardware, e.g. another virtual hard disk, if you want.
Then insert the installation CD/DVD in the CD/DVD drive, power on the virtual machine and start the installation.
