Help with IE8 closing for no apparent reason

Specs: Windows XP
I have a problem with IE8. This subject has been discussed but not with the problem I am having.

Since a week ago my IE8 opens for half a second and then immediately closes. No warning, no error messages....nothing. I have done all kinds of scans with adaware, spybot, virus scanner and nothing shows up. I have Ontrack EasyRecovery to see if there was any disk problems and nothing. I tried Tuneup Utilities as they can do checks and nothing.

I have no idea why it is doing this or how to get it to stay on. I use Opera as well and that has no problem opening and staying open. I tried uninstalling IE8, however it did uninstall properly. Under add/remove software the IE symbol is gone so I cannot even try to delete it. I also have an uninstaller which is what I used. I tried to reinstall IE8 and it said that I already had it on my computer. The folder is still on my computer in the Program File folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

I cannot go back to IE7 once you have moved onto IE8. It states that when you upgrade to 8. I cannot even uninstall IE period. It does not show up on any of the uninstall programs or the list in the control panel.

It still shuts down for no reason. I cannot even update my system. How do I update MS if my IE will not do anything at all? I really need some constructive help here.

I have installed Mozilla but this is still a bandaid solution unless I can go through Mozilla to get updates for MS.

I need suggestions. Many thanks.

I believe that your automatic updates will still work without Internet Explorer, but manual windows update DOES require Internet Explorer.
I do not have any additional clue, except to recommend Google-ing your problem, or going to Microsoft's site and seeing if they have a solution (knowledge database, or help line). Especially if you tell them you had to get there using Firefox.
Anyone else?

The new updates did not download. They came out today and to check I downloaded one of the updates. When I tried one last night it told me that I had a more current version of the update I was trying to download as it was an older one. Today I downloaded the new one and it downloaded.

I have no idea what the heck happened. I do know that in IE when I go to a site my computer keeps asking for my Dell disk. I have no idea why it started doing that. I put the disk in put it did nothing. I don't know what it wants or why it is doing it.

Thanks for your help. I have googled and they all apply to Vista. This is driving me nuts!!! I will try the windows site. Hopefully someone here will help.

Thanks for trying and asking on my behalf.
