Help! Computer wont connect to the internet

October 30, 2010 at 11:38:50
Specs: Windows XP
My computer has suddenly stopped connecting on to the internet. I was using Firefox to browse but suddenly, one day it would'nt connect. I tried Internet Explorer as an alternative, but this would'nt work either.

I have tried using another ethernet cable to one which I know works and this didn't help. I have run a full scan through my McAfee program to remove any 'nasties' and this has'nt worked either. I know that the internet is getting through to other devices in the house (including my son's laptop which I am now using) so I know that there isn't a problem there.

I have noticed on start up that I get an 'onyc.ffo' error and that my computer is very slow. Much slower than before I had the connection problem. Could this be anything to do with the problem ?

Unfortunately I am not very technical so any help or advice in its most basic form would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First thing to try is to open IE, click on tools/internet options/connections/Lan Settings and then uncheck use proxy server if it is checked. Then try to download the following free progs to your PC. If you can't get online use the following method.

I would download these cleaners on another PC, put them on a thumbdrive or burn them to a CD to load onto the problem PC.
1- rkill.exe
2- tdss killer
3- Malwarebytes
4- Trojan Remover
5- Hitman Pro.

You can google for those, don't forget...they are all free and fully functional!
Run those on the problem PC in that order and remove problems untill they are all clean.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
