Hangs at User Login

Specs: Windows XP
A friends computer has been behaving oddly in the last couple of days. They can not tell me what happened initially except that it died. (not very helpful)

What I have seen is that Internet Explorer was not in the program list in add/remove programs. Internet Options in control panel will not open.
Email was working.
She had downloaded GoogleChrome after she found that IE wasnt working and could access the internet that way.
The machine was going extremely slow.
The virus software that she was running had expired so she bought a new one and installed it and ran a scan. It did not pickup a virus. However, I believe it has a virus.
I downloaded a different virus software that I have found very good then uninstalled the other virus software.
Before I ran the scan, I thought I would run the Windows XP disk to fix the Internet Options issue.
I got a message saying that the computer is running a later version of windows then the disk and to remove the current version and load the one on the cd I would have to boot from cd.
She is currently running XP Service Pack 3 and the cd is Service Pack 2.
I have not booted from cd as yet.
However, now when I turn the computer on it boots up normally to the Login User screen. When I click on the User, (there is only 1) it hangs on a blank pink screen. I can open task manager.
If I boot from the Service Pack 2 cd, what will be the ramifications?

Take it to someone who knows what they're doing.
