Specs: Windows xp
I have a acer aspire . There are numbers on some of the letter keys and if I use the shift key I still get numbers. Is there a way to get the letters?

Try the numlock key. There should be an indicator that shows it's status.

The only remote possibility to try is to check the numlock startup in the BIOS.

You have to turn on the numeric keypad for the numbers to display. Look on your keyboard for an Fn key. Hold down the Fn key and press the NumLock key. F11 on my keyboard. This turns on the numeric keypad. Every time you press a key which has a number in blue, the number will print instead of the letter.
