gateway shuts down randomly

Gateway Mx6453 notebook

Hi, I've had this problem with my laptop shutting down at different times on different websites and I recently reformatted my laptop and yesterday i tried to watch something on Hulu and not even five minutes my computer shut down. I tried to restart three times and finally it rebooted. On the fouth time it started up. This is what was happening to me before I reformatted my laptop. This gateway does get a bit hot, but it always has, and the fan seems to be going on. I thought maybe my power cord was the problem but then I tried a different one and had the same problem. My computer could be on for the whole day without any problems but then I'll go to a certain website and then it'll shut down.
Any feedback would be very helpful. Thanks.

At a guess I think it is probably the CPU cooling fan and heatsink which is clogged up causing your CPU to heat up and eventually the laptop is shutting down due to its CPU thermal protection feature.

Blowing hard into the fan exhaust vent can sometimes clear it and makes the CPU run cooler. Alternativly a jet of air blast may also work.

Better still if you are confident and able to do so, you could open the laptop and clean up the fan heatsink assembly.

Why do you think it shuts down different sites? The first time was when I was trying to watch a tennis match video on www.usopen.org. Every time I watched the same match it would go off. But if I watched anything else other than that website, the computer would stay on?

Maybe it was coincidence probably, or that program was particularly CPU intensive.
There is alway an explanation for such unusual situations.

A new pontiac had a problem once where the owner would go to an ice-cream shop to buy ice-cream to take away. If he bought vanilla ice-cream his car would NOT start!!! Any other flavour and the car was OK.!!!

I guess I'll stay away from vanilla ice-cream for a while......
Just kidding! Great story.
I'll try blowing into the fan to see if it helps.
Thanks.
