Gateway laptop Hard Drive Compatibility Issue

Gateway Cx210x notebook
September 13, 2010 at 13:09:42
Specs: Windows XP, 7200 RPM SATA

I have a Gateway Notebook/Laptop CX210X and the Hitachi 80 GB Hard drive finally Died on it. I found a Hard drive on Ebay new with 320 GB WD Scorpio Black but not same brand as the Original Hard drive I purchased it but seems there is a seperate section of Terminals that is Not in My Laptop but is on the Hard drive I purchased . Anyhow I cannot get the Laptop to read the Hard drive after attempting to install recover disc it says no Hard drive Present. Any Suggestions would be Great. I was told There might be a bar-shape small connector on the top of your old hard drive. Please pull it out and mount it over the new hd. I didn't have any small connector to the Original but I did have an extra connector from another drive so I tried it and it wouldn't even turn the Laptop on so I know that won't work.
Do I need to Stick with the Hitachi Brand ? Can I do More than 80 GB ?

Brand name has nothing to do with it. XP doesn't support SATA HDDs unless you do one of 3 things....

See this thread, response #5:

The tablet was made around 2007 so it SHOULD be 48 bit LBA compliant. That said, the unit shipped with an 80GB 2.5" IDE hard drive. So, it is possible that you may not be able to use anything larger than 137GB.

When dealing with laptops it is best to get direction from the manufacturer. I would suggest you contact Gateway and ask.

How do you know the original hard drive is the problem? Did you run a drive fitness on it while it was still working. It is possible that the IDE controller or something else is the problem.

Did you buy a 2.5" IDE ATA type hard drive?

You shouldn't need to use the same brand. There usually are adapters on the drive to fit it to the laptop.

Below is a link to the gateway specs for that unit.

Jam -- XP Was Originally On this Notebook when I purchased it NEW from Gateway so Not sure why you are telling me that. Can you Explain that Further?

OtheHill---- Heres the Link to the Hard drive I purchased on Ebay,

according to the Seller as you will see it says CX210X it will fit but it cannot find it once it gets partially through the Recovery Disc, the 2nd CD that it part of Recovery process.
The Original Hard drive doesn't Boot up anymore thats How I know it doesn't work.

I used another Adapter for the new Hard drive and it Refused to even turn On the Notebook then Once I took it off the Hard drive and it then turned on so......I'm still trying to figure Out how this one will work, but Yes Maybe Gateway can Help me on the Largest GB.
Anymore Ideas Are Appreciated. Thanks

Why would you buy a used hard drive taken out of the same model laptop as yours. You can buy new for a little more.

That link doesn't describe if the drive is IDE or SATA. There seems to be some confusion about what you have.

OthHill, if you scroll to the bottom of the page, it says it's a sata drive.

Dlmno1, you're original drive was an IDE. As jam stated, you need to look at the link he provided about SATA. And as OtheHill stated, it may not be capable of a drive that large.

Well I am sending it back to the Seller,at least I had 30 days to figure this out and I am thinking it needs no more than 120 GB. And Yeah I see that SATA drive at the Bottom of the Auction and I also Emailed this seller with ALL the Specs on my Notebook to begin with and I was told Yes as long as mine was a cx210x..Hmmm...
Thanks for the Advice and Keeping me from racking my Brain any further. Great Help!

I know that. Look at the Gateway link I provided in #2. Gateway says it came with an IDE.

Grasshopper that is why I emailed the Seller to begin with IDE Mine and then SATA HIS........ way before I even bought that Hard drive but he swore it would work. Needless to say it does NOT and I Proved it.
I contacted Gateway to find out how Much GB my Notebook will take for Sure then I will go accordingly and buy from a Source other than Ebay. Don't get me wrong Ebay is great for alot of things,I have totally replaced the Outside ,the Keyboard Including the Screen of the CX210x and it was up and running for nearly 2 months but had Bad Sectors on the Hard drive so I knew it was a matter of time before it needed to be replaced.
To be Honest I definitely Don't Know alot about Computers but I have been Learning since I had the Passion of nearly a Year now of Putting My Favorite Notebook back together and I OWE Many Many Thanks to Great Places such as here and the Tireless Efforts of everyone here Helping and Pointing Me in the Right Direction and with that I Do Appreciate EVERYONE'S Help! Thank You so very much.
