If you used the "adminstrator backdoor" to change the user ID and password before, what is stopping you from using it again.

Windows XP has a built in user called administrator with full admin privileges. I take it this is what you used previously in which case there is no reason why you cannot use it again.

Stuart that's what I mean - when I went in and changed my original password using the administrator backdoor, I turned it off, because I figured that other people could use it to get in. So now I get a message "unable to log you on because of an account restriction". That's what I mean by goofy for not writing down the password and user id when I changed it, because I locked myself out. I was hoping to not have to get a restore disk from hp and wipe everything, but it seems like that's what I'll have to do.

Essentially what mickliq is saying is that because it is difficult to prove ownership of computers and particularly laptops you will be unlikely to get password help on this or any other forum. Unfortunate but there you are. The lesson of course is to make a note of password changes.
