Forgot username on windows XP and can't logon

January 9, 2011 at 19:44:06
Specs: Windows XP
Windows XP laptop had username entered that was always on the screen and we didn't ever setup a password.....just automatically clicked ok and the computer booted up. Today I tried to boot up computer and the username box is blank and for whatever reason it won't accept the username that we "thought" was the correct username.....? The only thing I can guess is that maybe my daughter was trying to startup the computer and went to type in a username which as a result cleared out the original and correct username. HELP!

Try starting in Safe Mode (tap the F8 key a few times at boot to get into the safe mode menu). You should get to the login screen with your username(s) and 'administrator'. Select administrator, if you've never set a password for that then your should be able to log on without one. Once on the desktop go to Control Panel/users, select your main account and select the option to remove the password. Restart in normal mode & you will be able to log on as normal, without a password.
