Magicjellybean will give you the operating system key if that is what you are after but I doubt you can boot the laptop drive in your PC. What operating system is it anyway?

Who is asking for the "Serial Number" in order to get the laptop repaired? Is that required by ACER so they can identify which appropriate component you need for your particular model laptop? Since you say it has only black screen does that mean the backlight has gone? Have you tried connecting a separate monitor to it to see if you can boot up and get a display that way?

ok ill explain everything i know and what i did.

when I boot the laptop, all the lights (hdd and power) flash as normal but the screen stays black. i tried hooking it up to a monitor but its the same result. the screen stays black. i look around the net for answers and some suggested to hold the power button to reboot the bios. that didnt work. I can not even get into bios. then i read that the mobo could be gone. so i went to acrer's site to see if i can get it repaired but they need that sid or s/n number to do anything. the sticker on the bottom of the laptop is gone and we cant find the box. i took the hdd out of the laptop and hooked it up to my main PC via USB to see if the serial number was stored somewhere but i can not find it at all. hence why i am asking if the serial number is stored on the laptop hdd anywhere so i can get this thing fixed. the screen is not broken not is that thing that lights up the screen. u can still see the light it produces so im guessing its something on the mobo thats fried due to heat.

So you did not keep any of the documentation you got when you purchased the unit? Usually the serial number etc would be on the purchase receipt or warranty card. If you've lost or misplaced all that along with the sticker off the unit then it might be time to retire the thing. A replacement motherboard is likely to cost more than the thing is worth if you can identify the board you need.

ACER systems normally do not have any file that has the serial number/model number on the drive. I agree that it is probably time to retire the system and replace it.

... have you tried tapping the Function keys?

... <Fn> + <sun> key *

... might also have to use * arrow up/arrow down key(?)

... depending on make/model, it'll be key from top row of keyboard with icon on it.

... worth a try! ...(brightness)

Now why would you want to pay $20.00 for a software to retrieve your OS key, when you can get the same thing for free with Magicjellybean.

thanks for the help guys but remember I am not after my OS key. I am after the SNIB or SERIAL NUMBER of the laptop itself.
