finding a boot disk?

Microsoft Windows xp home edition
January 10, 2010 at 08:08:51
Specs: Windows 7
I have an old dell inspiron 5100 that got an unmountable boot error.
Somehow, while trying to access the recovery screen I ended up accidentally removing the partition.
Which now leaves me with a missing operating system.
I don't have a boot disk, only the reinstallation cd that came with the computer. Can I download a boot disk?
All I want to do is recover my files, am I totally screwed?
I realize I sound like I am in way over my head (since I am). But any help is appreciated.

You can get boot disk at

If you do have your installation disk you can do a repair install. and you wont lose any files.

Google for do a "repair install" and print out the two pages. It's easy to do if done step by step.

I think my main problem is that when I turn on my computer all I get is a black screen that says 'missing operating system'.
I cannot get past this screen to get to the 'welcome to set up' or "Press any key to boot from CD" .
I did go into BIOS and have cd-rom listed first, but that hasn't made any difference.
Also, I am unsure what version I need to download from
The only xp listed is the 6 diskette one, and I need a cd-rom.
Thanks for any help.

Where are you at now ? Basically, you could download stuff from, but I had bad experiences with that one. Creating a bootdisk should not be that difficult. Just need some vital files.

I can send you my copy of files, you can try ...

Well, my boss' son-in-law is going to take a look at it and see what he can do.
Why is a bootdisk not available from microsoft? Makes no sense to me. I am always hesitant to download anything from random websites and like I said I don't even know what I should download from bootdisk, since the only XP I see listed is the 6 floppy set.
Any ideas?
Thanks again.

The first thing you want to do is take your computer to a shop familiar with data recovery.

You do NOT want to install or do ANYTHING to your computer until your partition has been restored.

Otherwise you risk making it so no recovery is possible.

BTW has been around for a long time and has many flavors of boot disk images to choose from.

But a bootdisk at this stage of the game gets you nothing.

Wanderer, your advice is definitely appreciated. I think I will just the the boss' s-in-l to forget it and bring it in to a shop. Thanks ever so much!
Now I am off to find a reputable shop...

More than likely that laptop does not have a floppy drive.
You need your OS install disk you got from Dell. Are you the orignal owner? You can get disk for dell's on ebay xp home or xp pro and you can download the drivers from dell.
Here is a inspiron 5100 0n ebay for $1.25

And here is a rescource CD for the Inspiron 5100
