Files missing after running Spybot

May 27, 2010 at 14:55:40
Specs: Windows XP
I recently ran Spybot. Apparently it stole something! CDs do not autostartand neither does my camera program when I plug it in. Any suggestions? I did go to msconfig>startup and everything is checked.

When you ran spybot did it find anything?
Why do you think there are missing files when its just autostart of the camera/cd that is affected?

Why do you think there are missing files when its just autostart of the camera/cd that is affected? Just guessing?

autostart is not file related but registry related.
is "just guessing" your answer to the question?

You wouldn't remember what it was you "fixed" would you?
Do you know how to find and restore a restore point?

Spybot makes restore points before it makes a change.

If it's just a Registry problem (which is likely) , a System restore to before you ran SpyBot can fix that.

1. Backups, 2. Backups and 3. Backups.

rosemk001,
You should be able to use Spybot's Recovery function to restore which registry entry it removed.

rosemk001 may wish to go to a restore point before the spyware infection which would kill two birds with one restore.

hence my question in post #3

I'm wondering if this happening was due to SpyBot or just one of those odd co-incidences. Many folk (including myself) use SpyBot and I've never heard if this issue happening before.

There are quite a lot of hits in Google about XP Autoplay issues. Here's one:

I have tried everything above, including the info on this page:

http://www.phdcc.com/shellrun/autor...
This page offers a download for something

It tells how to change a number in the registry to enable autoplay. Nothing has worked. I give up for tonight. It's 8PM and my pizza is cold!

And which Spybot were you using? There being a few out there with very similar names... and not the one I think many of us consider and use - SpyBot-S&D (Search & Destroy)

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/...

Some of the others tend to masquarade as the above by using similar names - but again they are not the same as above...; and some appear to be anything but friendly and safe to use... from some reports...

But the system restore (going back to an earlier restore point) may resolve it all for you -as already suggested above by others?
