ext hard drive install sata/ide connector

Specs: Windows XP sp3
I know enough to be dangerous ---
I have a semi-old HP desktop.
I bought an INTERNAL hd to act as storage.
It's a samsung spinpoint 500gb.
I wanted to put the new HD on the same ribbon as the existing 80 gig ultraATA drive.
1st problem - the connector was the 'old' type and would not fit on the new drive. It had the right type of power connector but the data connector was the old big type not the new smaller type (like i said...enough knowledge to be dangerous.)
Bought an adapter (SATA to IDE) which allowed me to make the connection.
New problem - The new HD would not fit next to the existing HD due to the adapter.
SO - I ended up putting the new HD <before> the existing DVD drive.
I can only boot in safe mode. In safe mode I have formatted the new HD and copied a few things.
However the DVD seems to have disappeared and I cannot boot into normal mode. it just hangs.
event log shows an error 'attached device is not functioning'. The DVD is not visible in device manager or explorer.
Is this a jumper issue on the new HD or DVD?

Why did you not buy an IDE Drive ???

Might be easier to buy a PCI SATA Card !

:Why did you not buy an IDE Drive ???:

I tried to determine what kind of drive was in there w/0 opening the pc...I failed.
it's installed and all. Can this work?
seems like it should. PC works in safe mode and the drive is usable in safe mode.
i'll look in to the Sata card. did not think of that. LIke i said...I know enough to be dangerous ;-)

UPDATE in case anyone cares:

Moved the new HD <after> the DVD which is set to cable select and it's now working.
