explorer.exe no longers works

Specs: Windows XP
I recently was asked by Windows Media Player to update. I did so, and it told me that I was already up to date, and that I should restart now. Later, when I tried to use it (before restarting) it gave an error massage. When I restarted, explorer.exe was not running. Olny my background is there. No desktop, no startbar and nothing happens when I right-click. I can open the ctrl+alt+del task manager, but in proccesses there is no expolrer. I have already tried restarting. I have used the 'Run new task' option to open it, but it says it cannot be found. I browsed for it in C:/WINDOWS/explore.exe but despite selecting the exact program, got a "Cannot be found" message. msconfig.exe does not show it in its startup section, nor does a system restore to any point, inculding a week before, work. What the hell do I do now?

the slash marks should be Backward Slash for the OS. Like this ---

How to Repair XP ----
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

Article says ----
An in-place upgrade is also named a repair installation.

I would run a Repair, not a reinstall.
