excel 2003 date formating

Microsoft Excel 2003 (full)

Specs: Windows XP
I go to format cells number date then pick the style I want from the list in my case 03/14/98 format the cell them go back in and enter 031498 and it changes it to 3/27/86 help me out

As Ewen pointed out, Excel questions are best asked in the Office Software forum.

That being said, you still need to use the slash / in your date entry, otherwise Excel thinks it is a number.

the only reason I wanted to format the cell was to have excel add the slashes. If I want to put them in I'll just format the cell to Text.

When entering a date in a formatted cell, I find it easy to use the dash (top right of number keypad) as in 3-16 or 3-16-10 will both give the same: 03/16/10 when leaving the cell. I find this fast and easy and not as cumbersome as entering the slash.
