Error msg starting up Dell: HDD is corrupted

Dell / Dimension 5000

Specs: Windows 7, 2.3GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
I am on a new Dell Inspiron now but want to know what this error/tech messege means. STOP: Ox000000ED. Dell said the harddrive is corrupt so I bought this Inspiron with windows 7 but want to know for surewhat my options are (since Win XP not compatable with 7 so backed up files will need a retail XP - more cost, etc.). I have tried every which way in boot menu and set up. Could I have instructions to restore factory settings and save XP?

When did you get this message? Straight on XP installation?

No after a few years smooth running, now getting it on start up. Tried all setup prompts (advanced safe mode too) but back to blue screen with same messege.

Have you already tried to unmount the harddrive and reseat it?

Download the harddrive diagnostic tool from the manufacturers homepage and check your drive.

Also check these 2 links:

You can also try a chkdsk /r from within the recovery console.
You may lose data on that.
