error code 1 booting to old & used HDD

Specs: SONY VAIO PC, 1 GB
Hi all I try to fit a used hdd on my XP PC ,and I get code 1 during the factory boot in, and I get no ware. could anybody tell me what is wrong? PLEASE thank you

... are you just using one harddrive on its own?

... depending on the type of drive, the "jumper" setting might be displayed on the drive itself, ide drive sample >> here, jumper settings differ on drive makes.

... "master" setting for just single drive more info here ....... more here

Thank you very much for the reply.My PC is Sony PCV-RX 402, 1GB RUM 40 GB HDD.I tried to install 500 GB Is a used hdd testing as an external trive was working OK .I delete the partition and then format it,open the PC and install the drive as Master drive connecting the 40 pin flat wire with the black color connector,and I start booting number 1-2-and3 Cd's when it tel me boot finistA blue screen come up saying (RUN CHKDSK/F I did that no errors) STOP:0x0000007b-0xc0000034-0x00000000-0x00000000 please help me thank you

... try "enter" your bios and disable the "Sata" setting.

... save settings on exit of bios!

I went to bios by pressing F2, in the bios screen i did not find the option to disable. sata.not exist
