Emachines 8230 (UK model) - hard drive fail

Specs: Windows XP, 2.5gb
I have had this computer for about 6/7 years bought it reconditioned from pc world.
in nov 2010 it wiped out everything on hard drive as if it werent there, i have some screen shots but it always comes up with the following error

it said (black screen)

"a disk read error has occurred
press control alt delete to restart."

SOMETIMES when i leave it for 30 mins say, it will load up everything and work normally but only be operational for about 5 or 10 mins but if i try 5 mins after i rebooted the machine it wil not, i have decided to buy a new hard drive 1tb sata hopefuly it will take it

is this definitely a hard drive issue yes i did try the check disk tool but it found nothing wrong.

i saw this post thought maybe its related to my issue.

not long after i bought this machine 7 years ago i have regularly heard grinding noises on the hard drive even after wiping the drive and reinstalling everything. the power supply unit has made noises for a few years as well but its it quietens down after a while.

i have had some issues with displaying some settings in bios such as master/slave options on hard drive, i could see it last time i switched it on but previous times it wasn't there, would there be any further issue that i need to look at apart from hard drive?

i am looking at buying hard drive from http://www.rusmart.co.uk no less than 500mb possibly 1tb sata if it will take this size can anyone help me with the specs of these internal hard drives as i am a bit confused with them.

thanks in advance.

Pretty much any SATA drive will be ok, most are backwards compatible.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

Ok, first find out the make of Hard disk WD Seagate Hitachi, then go to the manufacturers website & to find a disk utility tool.

Then you need to do a full scan of the disk.

UBCD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

has disk tools on it.

If the hard disk is making noises, you are living on borrowed time. You need to replace it. I cannot say if it is definitely the hard disk.

What do you find confusing about hard drives? speed, ie 7200 or 5400. SATA 1.5Gb 3Gb

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

I assume you did checkdisk through windows.

The links I gave you are for a bootable cd, so windows isn't used.

Generally the larger the disk space the more expensive.

If you need lots of storage space, for say videos, then bigger is better.

Just go to someone like scan or amazon & search for 500GB SATA internal drives. Or whatever size you need.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.
