Specs: Windows XP
Ive never had a problem with my dvd rw till now. It plays cd's both original and copys but wont play dvds or games where it used to?

Ive unistalled it, wiggled the wires ans checked the are all connected (they are) and ive downloaded codecs.

If i put a cd in it recognises straight away if i put a dvd in auto run wont pop up and when i click open on the dvd it dont even show?

Ive tried to update the dvd rom by going to the web site and when i do it cant even find it? when i go to windows to try and update there it cant find it either.

I have a packard bell running on windows xp the make of the dvd rw is optiarc dvd rw AD-5170A.

So now you have all the info can anyone help?

ive also cleaned the it with a cleaner disc, but cant remember if it came with a disc? ive searched website for a copy and cant find any?

It is possible you are looking for a software answer to a hardware problem.
Do you have any bootable DVDs ?
If so attempt to boot up to it. That will tell you definitively whether you have a hardware or software problem. If it will not read a bootable DVD before windows loads then the hardware is faulty and should be replaced.

Combination optical drives have 2 lasers inside. It is common to have one or the other not working as expected. There are two possible causes.

First is the lens for that laser is dirty, in which case you can clean it using a lens cleaning kit or by partially dismantling the drive to access the lens and clean with a Qtip and isopropyl alcohol.

The second possibility is that the laser has weakened to the point that it can no longer even read disks, let alone burn them. If that is the case then replace the drive.

Unfortunately you did not take the recommendations when signing up here to scan your system so we don't know what type of drive you have.
