Dropdown menus don't work in IE8

Specs: Windows XP Home, 3.0 P4 - 2gb DDR400
Regrettably, I was forced to leave my beloved Win2000 and now I'm fighting with XP Home on a new laptop. Right out of the box, I don't get dropdown menus in a few places, most notably when I try to hide system tray icons. I can use the keyboard to "arrow down" the menus, but it doesn't work with the mouse. Windows upadtes didn't fix it and Google isn't showing me anything but people wondering wehy their custom made dropdowns don't work. That's why I'm here, hoping someone else has seen the problem I'm having.

Why do you want to hide system tray icons in the 1st place? Right click on the Start button, then click Properties. Click the Taskbar tab then check or uncheck what you want or don't want. Here's what I recommend has a check:

- Keep taskbar of top of other windows
- Show Quick Launch
- Show the clock

Then click Apply.

I'm not quite sure why you're recommending what I should and shouldn't show on my computer, but I will tell you that it's a preference of mine to hide icons that I never have a need for. It also saves a little space on an 11 inch screen. But, your solution doesn't touch on the problem I'm posting for, which is the fact that I have dropdown menus that don't drop down. I used the example of the dropdown menus where you're supposed to be able to choose between "Always show", "Always Hide" and "Hide when inactive" because that's where I first noticed the problem.
