windows does not need a driver for a adsl modem. you only need the usb driver for your usb ports to be installed.

No (sob!) wandering. The little red light on the small Mercer
(Mustek) modem (fits in your hand) does not show up. I will
have to see whether I have the correct wiring tomorrow.

I once used it for about two years, set up by my son, and it
worked perfectly.

This is all due to fact that although my XP says Connected,
Firewalled, it just will not connect to the internet or email;
while the Win 7 on the same home network, works just fine.
Not one of 6 Pros (my ISP too) has been able fix it, even after
an XP format and install Tuesday. I tried the Mecer as my 4
connection Mega Router (Ethernet) suddenly stopped the XP
in it's tracks in the home network I had. Could the Win7 be
the cause? The home network worked fine and I was able to
print from the XP.

Thanks for your kind reply..and concern.

when the windows 7 pc is successfully connected to the internet go to a cmd prompt and type
ipconfig /all > c:iptest.txt

then type
exit which will close the window

with explorer/my computer browse to c:\ and open the file iptest.txt and copy the contents.

paste them here.

Do the same with the xp box for comparison.
