dos based programs in xp

Specs: Windows XP
I am having tally 4.5 dos based. I am trying to run the same in dos mode of windows xp.
I have made app changes in config.nt & autoexec.nt as " Files=50 , buffers=50 ". Tally works ok with these settings under win98 but are not working under win-xp. The error is " Insuffient file haldles provided "

Pls help resolve

Have you tried selecting "Compatibility mode?"

Increase files to 300 and try again.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Are you sure your shortcut for Tally 4.5 is bound to the correct config/autoexec.nt?

Right click the shortcut, select Properties/Program and hit the Advanced button. Verify the path of config/autoexec.nt.

Jefro has the right answer. DOS only created a limited number of file handles, 25 IIRC. I imagine the Windows XP DOS emulator is doing the same. Files 300 in the autoexec file will create 300 file handles. More than enough for anyone.
