Docs Settings contains an invalid character

Specs: Windows XP Pro
When attempting to install an upgrade of ActiveSync on an XP Pro SP 3 PC I get the error message : The path Documents and Settings contains an invalid character (No error number). I've found reference to others having similar problem on the net, but none of the fixes offered help in my case.

igo, SWAG, can you RIGHTCLICK on the offensive file name and rename it to an acceptable name and then delete?

I believe that the problem is in the registry rather than a file name or type.
